Northern
Lincolnshire CPRE Best Kept Village Competition
This competition has been running since the mid-1970s. It was sponsored
by Calor until 2006. In 2007 we obtained sponsorship from Conoco Phillips
for two years. This year, because of the lack of sponsorship, it
will be self-funding.
We also have four sponsors which enables us to offer prizes for individual
categories.
These are:
best kept churchyard for which Stephen Smith’s Garden Centre donates
a bench;
best kept playing field which receives a piece of play equipment from Fenland
Leisure;
best community planting scheme which receives vouches from Oakland Nurseries,
and, in its second year, best kept war memorial, sponsored by Pooley’s
Tearoom in Messingham.
Entry to the competition is open to all villages and small towns in North
and North East
Lincolnshire.
Just under half of them enter each year, most of whom are CPRE members.
Judging is done by
three volunteer couples and takes place at the end of June and the end
of August.
If your village or small town has entered this year’s competition,
and there will be a poster on your notice board saying so, your help will
be needed to show it in its best light. Judging takes account of a number
of issues, including: litter and vandalism; private gardens and community
planting; general maintenance of public building such as village halls
and other structures; and churchyards, cemeteries and war memorials. Judging
does not take account of natural
and architectural
features: the purpose is to establish how well local residents look after
and care for their surroundings.
Good luck to you all!
