Skills Centre
The new skills centre at Baysgarth is well under way and looks to be on schedule for completion in June with the internal fittings finished by the end of August. The project is a partnership between North Lindsey College, Sir John Nelthorpe, the Vale, Winterton and Baysgarth schools to benefit fourteen to sixteen year olds in this part of North Lincolnshire. There will be a wide range of courses available such as construction, motor vehicle mechanics and hair and beauty. The skills centre will make a great difference to the surrounding schools and will allow the teenagers to enhance their vocational skills. Pupils will be able to incorporate the vocational courses with the core academic subjects and help them to make a smooth transition to higher education.
The skills centre will also provide educational opportunities for the wider community by offering adult education courses in Indian Head Massage and Car Care and Maintenance for women.

Costa Rica Expedition
The magnificent seven pupils from Baysgarth School are working towards their fundraising goal but need as much help and support as the local community can muster! Preparations for the Summer Fayre are well under way; the date is fixed for the 17th July and bookings are currently being accepted for pitches. Please contact the school on 01652 632576 for further details. The team is also looking for any donations of raffle prizes and good quality books for a second hand book stall: collections can be arranged. Details of the expedition can be found at www.world-challenge.co.uk.

NITE PILOT ADVENTURE
A group of pupils from Baysgarth School took up the challenge of walking the Humber Nite Pilot. There were two groups involved; a group of boys from Years 9, 10 and 11, and a group of girls from Years 11 and 6th form. The majority of the pupils involved are a part of the Costa Rica world challenge team. Whilst walking the fourteen and a half mile hike, there were several different challenges, including driving a miniature tank and using mathematics skills to measure out 4lb of sand, using only 5lb and 3lb measurements!

The icing on the cake came a few weeks later when we attended a presentation evening in Hull where we were all given certificates for taking part and learned that the boys’ team from Baysgarth had achieved joint 3rd in the challenge. The prize for finishing in 3rd place is an opportunity to spend the day with Humberside Fire Service as a fireman!
This was a good opportunity to bond as a team as we’ll have to put up with each other for three weeks in Costa Rica next year.

Gym and Dance Display
After a very successful display last year, the PE department decided to hold another event. Pupils and staff created a diverse variety of routines to entertain their audience over two evenings. Audience figures are evidence that it was a great success and the amount raised was in excess of £600.
One hundred and fifty five pupils took part in the event and for some it was their first taste of performing in front of a live audience. Alice Marlow, a year 9 pupil, stated that, “You get to see what other people can do, you don’t know unless you perform in front of each other.”

Kera James, a year 8 student, who took part in the display last year, said that it was great fun last year and she was glad they had done it again. All the staff involved feel the same and enjoyed seeing them perform; they also felt that the kids’ commitment in lessons, lunchtime and afterschool rehearsals were fantastic. They showed real team work and all got involved with the event.

Year 9 visit to Hull University – ACE day
Year 9 had a taste of what university life would be like recently when they took part in the ACE* day at The University of Hull. Baysgarth students were able to talk to University students to gain knowledge first hand of what is expected of them and help them to prepare for the future. The student ambassadors were able to overcome some preconceptions of attending higher education and discussed the range of activities that are available around the campus. It’s not all work, work, work being a student and, with a nightclub on the campus, Baysgarth students were beginning to see the benefits of further education! Balancing study, lectures and leisure time was one of the areas that was discussed during the day and our students soon realised that everything came with a price and budgets were tight!
Some fabulous and engaging work was produced by the students and Hull University were pleased to invite us back for the event next year.
