After last
year’s successful Christmas Festival
ably assisted by members of the Chamber of Trade and the Christmas Festival
Advisory Committee, the result was a more contained event with an emphasis
on community and business participation.
The Festival, as a result, will this year contain all the usual entertainments,
stalls and two parades with the addition of a central attraction where
bands and entertainers will perform between 1.00pm and 8.30pm. The Festival
will take place on Saturday 28th November and we are reducing the disturbance
to commerce and the community by keeping the Cottage Lane car park open.
George Street, King Street and High Street up to Junction Square will
be closed to traffic from 8.00am to 10.00pm, with farmers’ stalls
starting at 10.00am on George Street. The remaining stalls and small
rides on King Street and High Street will start around 1.00pm.
The community parade leaves from The Ropewalk at 3.00pm led as usual
by the team of 6 reindeer pulling Father Christmas on his sledge. The
Lantern Parade will also leave The Ropewalk at 5.00pm, followed by the
Salvation Army Carol Service at the Christmas tree on High street with
the Christmas lights switched on by the Mayor, Councillor Ann Clark at
6.15pm
I hope you will be pleased with this year’s event and if you are
not, come and tell me because without your input and help we don’t
have a chance of getting it right.
All that remains is for me to thank Councillors P Vickers and J Evison,
the Christmas Festival Advisory Committee and the members of the Community
Regeneration committee not forgetting the Town Clerk and Deputy Clerk
for all their hard work and of course yourselves for providing the money
for the lights and this event.
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
Thank you.
Councillor Alan Todd
Chairman of Christmas Festival Advisory Committee
