BARTON UPON HUMBER
ROTARY CLUB

Barton Rotarians will be “out in force” on Barton’s Bike Night. As well as helping with the marshalling, members will be making a collection for BLESMA – The British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association.
“ As well as looking after veterans of earlier wars, BLESMA is very involved with the care of the newly injured personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and we felt that local people and the visiting bikers wanted the opportunity to support the many badly injured soldiers currently returning home”, said the new president of Barton Rotary Club, John Leaning. “ The association provides long term help – please make a contribution when you see our collectors during the evening”, continued John.

Also on Bike Night, Rotarians will be cooking and selling high quality Beef burgers, provided by Sargeants Butchers of Barrow. The stall will be in Junction Square. The sale of these also helps some of the charity work of the Rotary Club.

The Rotary ShelterBox appeal for Haiti has now reached 14 boxes from the Barton area. Each costs £490 and contains a 10-person tent, a stove, cooking and eating equipment, sleeping bags, etc. St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Ladies Group and St Mary’s Youth Group each provided the latest boxes, bringing the total to 14. Since then, Saxby All Saints and Ferriby Churches held a “Mile of Pennies” event, also to raise money for a ShelterBox.

Barton Rotarians are currently in the process of giving all of the children in Barton and the villages, who are moving from Primary to Secondary schools, an Illustrated Dictionary. John Leaning said, “ We did this last year and the books were very well received. They are more like a small encyclopaedia and we hope that they will find them useful during their future education”.
