It was a busy Christmas for Barton Rotary Club members. Helped
by Rotarians, Santa toured Barton, Barrow and New Holland
and brought excitement
to many young children, some of whom were brought out in their
pyjamas to see and talk to him. Barton Rotary President,
David Lee said, "This
year people were really generous with the donations given to us and
we collected a record amount. We extend a big thank you to everybody
who gave us so much. All of it goes to help mainly local people and
organisations".
Some of the money raised from the Barton collection has been used to
stage a concert for over 100 elderly people from Barton, Barrow, and
Goxhill. They were transported to the event in Baysgarth School Hall
where they were entertained with Christmas music and songs by Barton
and District Amateur Operatic Society and Barton Town Band. They were
also served refreshments.
On Christmas Day, Barton Rotary Club members cooked and delivered 48
Christmas Dinners to elderly people who were on their own or could
not cook a meal. Some of these were delivered in Goxhill, Barrow
and New Holland.
A large quantity of spring bulbs have been planted around the trees
in Baysgarth Park by Barton Rotary Club, led by David Witter.
The project
continues the work of previous years.
Following the 2,000 Lifestraws sent to Colombia and West Africa last
year, another 1,000 has been dispatched to the city of Manizales in
Colombia. The area has suffered severe flooding with the loss to the
inhabitants of their drinking water. The Lifestraws, which have been
distributed by Rotary Clubs in the area, is used to clean contaminated
water by sucking it through the internal filters.
